Troglodytic Week Tuesday

On Tuesday we hiked, or should I say, scampered-hiked Pigeon valley between the towns of Goreme and Uchisar.

The valley, as you may guess, is full of pigeon houses. One source I read said that pigeons were trained to deliver messages around central Cappadocia, although I haven’t heard that one verified. Several sources have talked about the use of pigeon droppings as guano. According to one guide, farmers still collect the droppings from the pigeon houses to use on their fields.

The hike passes though a beautiful valley with the occasional cave.

When we started our walk we were joined by a protective and happy yellow lab. The dog led us down the path, and seemed concerned when we took a wrong turn. In fact, if we had followed her the whole way the hike would have been much shorter, although also less interesting.

We returned to the hotel around dusk exhausted, sweaty and happy.
