Penang is food heaven. Let me clarify a tad since Penang is not the same food heaven as is Paris. Penang is covered with collections of street stalls, food courts, and cheap restaurants. Our meals have been running from $5 to $10. $10 includes the beer. A meal that rings up as $20 feels extravagant and unnecessary, and is often not nearly as delicious as the $1.50 noodles from the street stall. At food courts and street stall collections, you pick a table and then walk around to the various stalls ordering food and giving them your table number. When the food is ready, they walk it over, piping hot. Drink-people walk by and take your order. It is pretty amazing.
Other than the banana leaf meal, all of these pictures were taken at either food courts, collections of street stalls, or in super cheap, street stall-y restaurants.
Cheap "Economic Rice" Lunch - Basically point what you want with your rice. This plate is veggies plus some unknown organ meat on the lower left
Cheesy food court sign at our closest food court -- this place is awesome: New World Park, only open for lunch.
Lunch next to Kek Lok Si at a Chinese street food court. This is duck rice. In the background is a noodle soup.
Cendul - Dessert. Shaved ice with coconut water, red beans, and some kind of bean paste extruded and food colored.
At a gigantic collection of street stalls about 1 km from the hotel: upper left: sweet and sour veggies, upper right: bok choy, lower center: satay.
That Satay needed a close-up. Top satay: with pineapple and mango, bottom satay: standard with peanut sauce.
