Mekong Delta Part 1

We went to the Mekong delta for several reasons:
1. It is iconic and cool
2. I wanted out of crazy Saigon
3. We were searching for clean air
4. Adventure
5. We would get to take a boat ride and boat rides are always cool

Towns along the Mekong

We drove the 4 hours to Can Tho and then boarded our boat for the night. Considering my flirst choice last week would have been to get on a plane for Aallesund, Norway, ASAP, this was a pretty great second best.
Love those life vests

We spent the next 22 hours aboard a boat in the Delta. After lunch and some cruising time we switched to a smaller boat capable of carrying us up the smaller canals of the delta. Eventually we got out and walked through a village for about 1 km.

Along a smaller finger of the delta

This village walk ended up being about 2 main things: 1. fruit 2. avoiding dogs. Our guide pointed out all the tropical fruits as they grew on trees. I had never seen jack fruit or dragon fruit or water coconut growing on a plant before. It was pretty darn interesting. Then we stopped at a family's house and they served us fruit.

The fruit was delicious, but I must admit my favorite part was meeting the daughter's baby pig. I basically met the Fern and Wilber of Vietnam, but this girl sees more tourists.

Alas, we were not totally successful at finding clean air. There is a fair amount of industry along the delta and smoke like this was not uncommon

Then it was back to the boat for some cruising and finally dinner and deep deep boat sleep.
